Phthalates are a family of chemicals that are produced in the millions of tons annually worldwide, and are a principal component of many diverse products that consumers come into contact with at home, work, and in hospitals.  They include PVC plastic, cosmetics and other personal care products, pesticides, building materials, lubricants, adhesives, film, children’s plastic toys, flooring, wall coverings, medical products, and more.

DBP, DEP, DEHP, BBzP, DMP are commonly used in a variety of cosmetic and personal care products.  Recent testing identified these phthalates in some hair spray, hair gel, hand and body lotions, fragrances, and deodorants.  Many nail polishes also have high quantities of DBP.  Unfortunately, labeling requirements are sufficiently lax so that it is extraordinarily difficult to identify phthalate-containing products.

Health effects caused by exposure to phthalates differ among the various individual compounds.  Young developing organisms are more vulnerable than adults.  In particular, the developing male reproductive tract appears to be the most sensitive.  A combination of limited human studies and a wealth of animal studies show that phthalates can impair reproduction and development, alter liver and kidney function, damage the heart and lungs, and affect blood clotting.  Studies have focused on cancer as a phthalate-related health concern.
