Where Do You Get Your Makeup?

Beauty Blog: Make-up

The beauty industry is a major money maker all over the world, not just in the United States. If you had to to keep track of what you spend annually on makeup/beauty products would you be surprised? Do you realize that you might drop $20 for a lipstick or $7 for an eyeliner pencil? What we spend on makeup and beauty products depends on where we shop and what products we like to use. The possibilities are endless when it comes to having the perfect place to purchase these products.

Lets think close to home… There are Drugstores and Pharmacies. According to Bobbi Brown in her book Makeup Manual, drugstores and pharmacies are convenient and carry a wide variety of mass-market products. Purchase basic supplies such as nail polish, cotton balls, makeup sponges, and cotton swabs at these retailers. Very few of the products can be tested before buying, so purchase might not meet your expectations. I personally think that unless you are in a bind and need something in a pinch, drugstores and pharmacies are too expensive even for these items.

Department Stores are another wonderful option when buying beauty products. Brown states: high-end brands are typically sold through dedicated counter areas in department stores. All of have seen these counters in malls and stores such as Macy’s and Nordstrom’s. She continues to say most of the people you will encounter are trained in makeup application and are able to provide valuable advice and information on products, application, etc. You also have the benefit of testing the makeup before you buy it and many department stores will let you return or exchange the product if you get it home and are not satisfied. You should be aware that some sales staff are paid on commission so you might be pressured into making a purchase while some are not paid this way so their approach might be a little softer.

Beauty Supply Shops are a place that makeup artists depend on. Here they can find professional-quality products at budget friendly prices. You will receive personalized attention and won’t be rushed or pressured to make a purchase because the sale clerks are not paid on commission. These stores will usually ship any-where in the country. However keep in mind that some of these beauty supply shops require you to have a professional license to shop there.

Beauty Superstores are your one-stop shop. Sephora and Ulta are two such stores. They offer a wide range of mass-market, prestige and niche products. The staff is knowledgeable and willing to answer questions. Here you can sample products and can return or exchange products if they do not work out for you.

Specialty Stores are freestanding stores such as many M.A.C. locations. They offer a wide selection of products and is usually a good place to find trend-driven shades, foundations, and concealers.

Brown also discusses shopping from catalogs in her book but I think the time has come where many of us do not shop from catalogs but rather from the Internet. The Internet is the place where you can find any makeup or beauty product you are looking for as long as it has been invented. Most places offer free shipping if you spend a certain dollar amount. They also may provide free samples with your purchase and will always want your email information to provide incentives for you to come back and shop with them.

Supercenters and Superstores are also places to shop such as Target and Wal-Mart. They offer tons of makeup and beauty products along with the cotton balls, cotton swabs, sponges and tools at a discounted rate. You might pick up your lip liner here rather than dropping $30 at your favorite specialty store.

So where do you shop for your makeup and beauty products?

  • Being an organic girl, the department stores and discount stores aren’t that great an option for me when it comes to cosmetics. I’m strict about the ingredients I will and will not use. So the best option for me is usually buying my stuff online. I have a few trusted companies that I purchase from. In a pinch, I will go to Whole Foods and drop a pretty penny on a beauty item!
