The Power of Tea
Beauty Blog:
On a recent outing to Belmar in Lakewood, I was at a meeting at a wonderful tea store called Wystones Tea. Most of us have seen that tea is making a come back but I had never really thought about all the wonderful, natural properties tea had until I was here. After having a wonderful strawberry, frozen tea - very much like a smoothie - I wanted to check out their website and learn a little more about tea. I am an avid iced-tea drinker but I rarely drink any other types of tea.
I checked out a few additional websites to see why tea is good for me and here is some information I found out. Keep reading because I am going to get back to why I love Wystones Tea. This tea information was found several places on the Internet. Tea, whether black or green, caffeinated or decaffeinated, is a natural source of anti oxidants, called flavonoids. These are good for you, and can help to protect the body’s cells against damage from free radicals. Scientific studies have found that a diet rich in anti oxidants could help reduce the risk of developing cancer, heart disease and strokes. There are other potential benefits too, in helping to prevent certain chronic and aging diseases such as arthritis, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Tea also contains an amino acid called theanine, which has been found to bring about a relaxed but alert state of mind. That’s the reason why we think of a cup of tea as a “pick me up”.
As I continued my research on tea, I found this amazing article that had studies to back up the claims it made. Here is a brief excerpt from the article with a link to find out more information if you are interested. Why is Tea So Good For Us? by Jane Pettigrew
By drinking a regular quantity of tea, scientists now know that we are taking in various enzymes, minerals, vitamins, and amino acids. But most important amongst the vital components are the magic ingredients called polyphenols which account for about 30% of the dry weight of the leaf. Polyphenols are sub-divided into flavanols, flavonols, flavandiols, flavonoids and phenolic acids, and most of the polyphenols in green tea are flavanols which are commonly known as catechins. These catechins break down further into EGCG (Epigallocatechin-3-gallate), EGC (Epigallocatechin), ECG (Epicatechin-3-gallate), and EC (Epicatechin). The most abundant of these four, and therefore the most important to the health story, is EGCG. These catechins are thought to act as powerful antioxidants that can help protect us against various diseases including heart disease and cancer by inhibiting or slowing down the development of cancerous lesions and tumors in various parts of the body including the digestive tract, the intestines, the lungs, the liver, the stomach and the skin.
Based on what I found while doing research and looking at Wystone Tea’s website, I have found that I would like to try more teas and see if I can expand my knowledge on teas. When you visit Wystone in person or on their website, you will find that they have information on teas that help with fitness, weight loss, stress reduction, and many other areas related to your health. Give them a try and tell them we sent you! You might find a new, exciting tea that you will need to share with us!
