The Retreat on Larimer is located in the Ballpark district of downtown Denver. It is a wonderful Denver Day Spa and one we have recommended time and time again. We recently we able to speak with the owner Dawn about her business and this is what we learned from her. We hope you enjoy what she shared as much as we did.
How and why was The Retreat on Larimer created/opened?
I have always had a passion for skin care and spa treatments. After getting my esthetics license, I really wanted to do something where I could use my finance experience with my new career in skin care. A long-time goal of mine was to open my own business. A little over 3 years ago, things just fell into place, so I went for it!
How long has your company been in business?
We have been open 3 years as of July 26th!
What made you put your focus on a spa?
Knowing I wanted my own skincare business, I knew how much I loved results AND pampering. My goal was to offer both in one location. Skin care and massage go hand in hand. They are both a physical & mental form of therapy.
Why downtown Denver?
I chose the ballpark neighborhood of downtown for several reasons. I love the history of this neighborhood. Our building still has the original brick from 1901 in the reception area and couples treatment room. Not only that, but I knew the neighborhood would be booming in just a couple of years. I wanted to be apart of the excitement and growth! Lastly, I saw that downtown was really lacking in a neighborhood spa. There are the larger, hotel, corporate spas, but not a spa clients can call home! I wanted to bring that to downtown.
How do you select the products that are used in your spa on clients?
Selecting products is one of the hardest tasks (but most fun). Before even testing a product line I make sure they follow our strict guidelines: no animal testing, no parabens, no harsh chemicals, dyes or fragrances, eco-friendly, etc. After they pass that test, I physically test the product. This is where friends and family get involved. We all try products for 6-8 weeks. I am looking for RESULTS! There are far to many products out there that smell good or feel good but offer no results! I want to make it easy on our clients. They know that the products we carry will be good for them, the environment and offer great results!
How did you decide what services to offer?
I knew I wanted to offer skincare and massage. With that we went into more spa treatments – body wrap, scrubs, etc. Also, waxing and make-up go hand-in-hand with skincare. I wanted to stay away from a “salon” atmosphere. I think that the sound of blowdryers or the smell of hair dye can spoil the relaxation of a massage. Recently, we added airbrush tanning! We’re really excited to offer this service to our clients. It’s an important part of skincare and anti-aging. We all love to be tan, but the harmful effects of the UV rays from the sun reverse everything we all work (and pay) so much for!
What is your favorite treatment for yourself?
Its really hard to decide on just one. Massages & facials are my favorites for relaxation. Chemical Peels and Microdermabrasion are my favorite for quick results!
What is your favorite treatment for women?
Women love facials! They also love body scrubs. The Colorado dryness reeks havoc on not only the skin on our face, but all over the body! Body scrubs are not only relaxing, but leave your skin baby soft!
What is your favorite treatment for men?
I like to see a guy get a facial! They always end up loving it! It’s a great feeling to help them discover an easy, but effective skin care regimen.
How do you see your company growing in the next several years?
Over the next couple of years I hope to expand some of our product lines to offer more choices for our clients. We are always working to make our treatments even better! We never want to become complaisant in our work.
