Beauty Blog: Coupons and Special Offers
Times are rough for many people right now and for some people now is when they really start to look at their budget and look at what they can do without. Yes this might be what you need to do if you eat out every day for lunch and dinner and you visit Khol’s every time there is a sale. But if you are pretty good with your spending and you are just needing to cut back some more or are looking for ways to save, we have some tips and resources for you.
Let me start by saying spend the $1.50 a week for your Sunday paper! The coupons are worth it. Also it will give you a chance to see what is on sale that you need that week or might be getting low on. I spend time every Sunday morning clipping coupons and looking in the flyers to see what is on sale at Target and the grocery stores. I love Super Target and usually just shop there and Whole Foods but if King Soopers or Safeway is having a good sale, I stop there. There are certain items I will not buy unless I have a coupon and it is on sale - laundry detergent, dish soap, diapers, wipes. I have found that I can save anywhere from $1-$5 on some items this way. If the store is offering $2 off and I have a $1 off coupon I have just saved myself $3 on one item. The last two weeks at the store with bargain shopping and coupons I have saved my family $36. That is an evening having pizza.
Some other ways I have started to save is look at the generic brand. Target has a great store brand. Try it out and see if you can save money that way. I know I have saved my family money this way. Jim Hertel of the market research from Willard Bishop, “Today many generics or store brands taste great and run about 25% less than their big name counterparts.”
Consider creating a shopping list before you go. If you do this you will likely spend less money because you will get what is on your list and not what sounds or looks good. Use grocerywiz.com, knotler.com and ziplist.com to help you create a list that fits your needs. You can save it on your computer and print it when you go to the store.
A wonderful resource I just came across in the October 2009 issue of Women’s Health Magazine is buying cheap gift certificates for restaurants. This helps save money when eating out. They suggest using restaurant.com to find gift certificates well below face value. Several restaurants in my area are offering $10 gift certificates for $4.
