Post C-Section Workout

Beauty Blog: Health and Fitness

I recently had my fourth child, Karson. This is my second C-Section in the last 18 months. I am very interested in getting back into shape and requested some advice from Ron Betta. Here is what he suggested that I do and I am passing along his great information to all of you.

To Avoid:
You’ll want to avoid any really heavy lifting or exercises that really challenges your body.  You need to recover and that can take around 6 months.
Avoid twisting and turning.  Your muscles may feel great, but the tissue will need time to recover - again - several months.

What I recommend:
I recommend a good deal of walking - slowly - getting progressively quicker as you recover.

I’d also find a yoga instructor in your area who can help you with post-c-section yoga.  I recommend this to help you get back in touch with your body.  I often differentiate the difference between Yoga and exercise like this:  Exercise involves challenging the muscle and pushing it beyond it’s current limit.  Yoga is challenging the muscle slowly to enhance the mind/body connection.  Many Yoga instructors specialize in pregnancy related issues. Static contractions are ideal.  Kegels will help you as well and as long as your Doctor approves all these exercises, go for it! Water is absolutely essential!  I highly recommend taking a look at the water site http://www.wellnesswithwater.net/.

The single most important thing I want you to know about fitness (and this takes some patience) is the importance of being in touch with your body.  Walking will eventually lead to jogging or bike riding.  I’d look into dvd’s of cardio exercises you like and can do in your home.  In a few months, you can advance. If you take your time and get in touch by walking, practicing Yoga and taking things slow now, you’ll be able to knock it out later on.

I plan to follow Ron’s great advice and get back to you in a month. If you have great post C-Section exercises, you did let us know. To learn more about Ron Betta, visit www.abettafit.com

  • I would only add that you take care when exercising.  Yoga is very good but as you say absolutely avoid heavy lifting and exercises that challenge your body.

The thing about a good exercise regimen is you will feel a lot better and you will also feel less tired and fatigued. Consistency is also important but be patient and take it slow.

  • I think one thing many women don’t realize about their C-section incision is that there is also an internal incision.  That means there’s a potential danger of tearing the internal incision if your exercise is too rigorous.

You offer some good points but I’m in total agreement with you, walking is a great place to start and Kegels are also a great exercise.

Both are ideal for hitting those trouble spots without causing injury.

    Take Care,
    Elizabeth grin
