Botox Uses for Both Medical and Cosmetic Reasons

Beauty Blog: Body Care

Botox is a toxin made from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It has the power to paralyze muscles making Botox injections and Botox cream useful for cosmetic and medical reasons. Doctors and plastic surgeons use a weak form of the toxin in injections. Creams also are made from a very weak form of the bacteria and do not require a doctor visit to apply.

Medical Reasons
There are several medical reasons for the use of Botox. For example, spastic torticollis a condition that causes persistent muscle spasms in the neck making the head tilt to one side. Achalasia is another condition where Botox injections help alleviates spasm of the esophagus that makes swallowing difficult. Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating also is treated with the toxin. It works by paralyzing the nerves that stimulate sweat glands. The injections generally give the patient six months of relief from excessive sweating. Migraine and tension headaches are another condition treated with injections. The injections work by reducing the number of pain neuropeptides and blocking the transmission of pain sensations.

Cosmetic Reasons
The most common cosmetic reason for Botox treatments is to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Muscle contractions cause wrinkles and the toxin stops these contractions by relaxing the wrinkles and giving the skin a smoother appearance. The treatments are popular, as they greatly improve a person’s appearance and the risk of side effects is low. The FDA has approved the treatment for all wrinkle-reducing procedure of the face. The injections generally last about six months and deep wrinkles may require several injections before relaxing or disappearing.

Botox Injections vs. Botox Cream
The price of Botox is lower when using creams as compared to injections and creams are less invasive. Creams also work on fine lines and small wrinkles and injections do not. Don’t expect immediate results with the cream but it is a good choice for those wanting to reduce the price of Botox procedures. People apply creams without a doctor visit. Rubbing the cream into the skin reduces the number of neurotransmitters in the skin that create muscle contractions, which causes wrinkles. The creams are most effective around the eyes and on the forehead.

  • Great information! Botox has so many interesting medical uses. Doctors are now using it to also treat things like scars, eye tension disorders and even foot ulcers! It’s so interesting the things doctors are finding can be treated by Botox. Best of luck!

  • I know Botox is a very popular treatment for wrinkles, but putting a toxin in your body frightens me just a tad.  There has to be other ways.  I do agree using it when it is a medical situation just not for beautification purposes.  This is only my opinion.

  • When thinking of getting Botox injections, check with the doctor first.
