Beauty Blog: Health and Fitness
I completed my first 10k on July 17th. The ZOOMA race at the Broadmoor in the Springs. I was not sure what to expect in terms of the course but I knew there were two laps around the hotel. I completed the training, 8 weeks of it. I did it all - trails, hills, flat. I put in my long run the week before. I however did not do my short run on Wednesday. I couldn’t find the time to get out there and run and I cannot run on a ‘mil.
I spent the night at the Broadmoor which was amazing. I got up on Saturday morning and got ready for my race. I had earned a new outfit for the run. 8 weeks of training for a 10k = a new outfit. I love lulelmon’s clothing and I added a new Power Y Tank and a new Run Speed Short to my workout clothing. The entire outfit is comfortable for running and usually keeps me cool.
The run started and I wasn’t 100% sure what to expect. However around mile 1 I realized there would be a hill. No big deal because I had been training on a hill by my house. My long runs included this hill every time about mile 1.5. It wasn’t until hill one became hill two that I was not so pleased with this course. I knew that I would be running these same hills again because the signs told me so. Not only were there signs for miles 1, 2, 3 but you saw the signs for miles 4, 5, 6. This made me not so happy. I did find pushing up the first hill, so so on the second hill - I walked to the water station.
Once I hit the hills for the second time my left shin and foot were no longer “crying” at me, they were “screaming” at me. I wanted to stop. I wanted to give into the pain and be done with the whole thing. It was hot, I was hot but I would not stop. I was in front of the 10 mile pacer for this long, I would reach my goal = 10k in 11 minute miles. Yes 11 minute miles. I knew I could do this. It was realistic for me. I could do 11 minute miles and complete the race with shins screaming. Hill number 2 of lap 2 killed me. I had to walk some. I had to rub my shin. I wanted to rub my foot but I was not about to take my shoe off and rub my foot. I was passed by the 10 minute pacer.
After hill number 2 of lap 2 I started to run again. I was hoping I could catch the 10 minute pacer, I could see her pink shirt and then I lost it. I knew I would not make 10 minute miles. I was upset, I could have done it if I would not have walked as long, if I would have trained a little harder. Oh well. I could finish with 11 minute miles. I pushed and I ran and I finished. I almost missed the turn for the finish because there was not a sign for the 10kers and the halfers. I almost became a halfer. However I was directed to the correct area at the last minute. I ran over the finish line and my name was called. I did it! I finished the 10k. This was off my bucket list.
When the race was over I took off my shoes, rubbed my foot and smiled. I completed the race in 1 hour, 6 minutes, and 8 seconds. I had done my personal best. (Has to be since this is my first 10k). I was happy I had done this, I had seen it through to the end. Not sure I will do another 10k unless I know there are not 2 sets of hills.
I will bike and run in September as part of the Dolls for Daughters Tri for Your Cause Team. If you are interested in being part of this team, contact and let her know. I am glad to be back on my spin bike and not pounding the pavement.
